"Note: The Greenleaf Genealogy gives his baptism Jan 2, 1574. This would make him nearly 60 years old when his youngest child was born, 70 when he was at the head of the militia, and 97 at his death. He married Sarah Dole, and had several children born in England. In 1635 he came to America with his family, and settled in Newbury, Mass." "He was by trade a silk-dyer."

Edmund Greenleaf, the common ancestor of the family, came to America and settled in Newbury, Mass., in 1635. As the origins of the family, it is believed that the ancestors of Edmund were Huguenots, the name being a trraslation of the French "Feuillevert." As the name has not been found among the English parishes, other than in Ipswich, County of Suffolk, England it is believed that the family (Feuillevert) came as French refugees to England with many other Huguenotts, who fled from their homes on account of religious principles, and settled in England sometime in the sixteenth century."
