Quote from: Robert Oliver Fuller Bixby, Fuller Genealogy, p. 1:
According to an article in the NEHG Register (93:288), Robert's brother, Alfred attended public schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1881. It is likely that Robert did the same, graduating two or three years earlier. From early boy-hood Robert's ambition had been to follow the sea. At about 18 he was able to sign on to the crew of the bark Mohican sailing with cargo from Boston to Melbourne, Australia. This was an arduous adventure on a relatively small ship lasting several weeks. That apparently satisfied his yearning for the sea and he left the Mohican in Melbourne and, I believe, returned to the United States as a passenger on a larger ship. Since his father was a very successful businessman and the family lived on a large estate at 125 Prospect Street in Cambridge, he could easily have afforded to travel in style; however, being a self-made man, his father probably encouraged his sons to go out and do things on their own. There is no record of what Robert did between 1880 and 1892, but it is most likely that he spent several of those years working for his father as an iron dealer. In 1892, when he married Nicholas, his mother's seamstress, much to the displeasure of some members of the family, the newly married couple took up residence in Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago and Robert became a dealer in tinplate, a business possibly set up by his father. In 1913, at the age of 54, Robert retired and returned with his family to Massachusetts where they moved into the newly built house at 109 Barnard Avenue in Watertown. During World War I, Robert served in the State Guard. This was a home guard that drilled once a week and on at least one occasion in July, 1918 had a five-day encampment at Framingham, MA. They may have been following the old colonial rule that able-bodied men between 16 and 60 were 'able to bear arms'. Some of the men in the unit were called to active duty, but it seems unlikely that Robert at age 59 would ever have been called.
