He had a friend, same age by the name of Harry Palmer. John was trying to get on with the Mayo Brothers Clinic in Rochester, MN but he needed to have a birth certificate. Harry Palmer said " use mine, I'm going up to Canada anyway." This was when you could still cross over the border no questions asked.
